What Is Brigit?

Brigit is a personal finance app that provides up to $250 in no-interest cash advance payments every month. Additionally, you can use Brigit to build credit through their credit builder loan program. This “holistic financial app” also comes with a suite of financial tools that can help you explore your spending habits, plan for bills, avoid overdraft fees, and protect your identity.

The company was founded in 2019, so it is still relatively new. However, Brigit claims to have already saved its users more than $250 million in fees since their launch. The company says that it saves individual users an average of $514 a year.

How Does Brigit Work?

Brigit is available for both iOS and Android devices, and it also works with over 6,000 banks and credit unions. That means practically anybody can use it – although Chime Bank, Capital One, Varo, and Net Spend are some popular exceptions.

To get started, simply download the Brigit app and connect your bank account. After connecting your account, the app provides insights on your spending activity and any bills that may be coming due soon. The app can also predict whether or not you’ll have enough money to pay your upcoming bills through the overdraft prediction tool, which is a pretty cool feature.

Although some of Brigit’s basic functions of are free to use, many of the app’s most important features require a paid membership. So, if you really want to take advantage of Brigit, the paid Plus membership is a must.

Brigit Plus currently costs $9.99 per month and unlocks all of Brigit’s features. This includes services such as the credit builder account, cash advances, identity theft protection, and more.

Top Features of Brigit

Credit Builder Account

The new credit builder account is by far my favorite offering from Brigit. Not only is it designed to help you build credit, but it helps you save money too!

This account is essentially a loan that you repay over a maximum of 12 months. Brigit then reports your payments to all three major credit bureaus, helping you build a credit history and improve your credit score.

Here’s the best part: At the end of the 12 months and when you’ve repaid your loan in full, Brigit gives back all the money you’ve paid toward the loan. That means that your credit score should improve and you’ll have saved money. It’s a win-win.

No credit checks are performed or needed for approval. Additionally, you will not be charged interest on the loan, and there are no prepayment penalties if you want to pay the loan off before the 12-month period ends. Unlike a secured credit card, you don’t even need to put a deposit down up front. Brigit even offers flexible repayment options, allowing you to repay as little as $5 a month.

With that said, you do need to be a member of Brigit Plus and pay the $9.99 per month subscription fee to qualify.

Cash Advance

Do you need a little cash to float you through until payday? Brigit Plus members can receive up to $250 a month in cash advance payments to help them pay bills and avoid overdraft fees.

Brigit offers both regular and instant advance requests. You can also set up auto advances that can help protect you from a predicted overdraft of your bank account.

Although no credit checks are required to qualify, you do need to be a Brigit Plus member. They also require a “Brigit Score” of 70 or above to receive instant cash. This score is calculated by considering your bank account health, your earnings profile, and your spending history.

What Others are Saying

In terms of user reviews, Brigit has over 150,000 combined reviews on Google Play and the App Store. Earning an average rating of 4.5 stars is very respectable, especially with that many reviews. However, you may want to dig deeper before you decide to subscribe.

As of the date this article was published, it appears that Brigit tends to earn either five stars from reviewers or a one star rating. There isn’t much in between. Recent poor reviews tend to complain about cash advance and customer service issues while the positive reviews rave about how helpful the app was for them.

Keep in mind, this isn’t unusual for user reviews. Those motivated enough tor write a review for a product are typically either really excited about it or had a problem of some type.

I will say that Brigit tends to respond to the negative reviews with their desire to help, so that is a plus. On the flip side, they only offer chat and email support rather than a live phone call. In any event, be sure to consider these issues prior to subscribing.

Who is Brigit Good For?

  • People with Bad or No Credit – Brigit offers a smart way to build your credit through their credit builder account. No credit checks are required for approval plus you’ll save money while you build your credit.
  • Those Needing a No-Interest Cash Advance – Getting a cash advance with bad or no credit typically means getting a payday loan or another type of loan with a terrible interest rate. Brigit tries to solve this problem by offering Brigit Plus members up to $250 in cash advances per month. Keep in mind you will need to pay the monthly subscription fee to be eligible.
  • People Needing Overdraft Protection – With their automatic cash advance feature, Brigit helps you avoid overdrafts by ensuring you have enough money in your account to cover your bills.

Alternatives to Brigit

Brigit is a good fit for people with bad credit or no credit, but it may not be right for every situation.

If you are looking to build credit quickly, you may want to consider a secured credit card instead. These are credit cards that have a small limit and are backed by collateral – usually in the form of a deposit from you. So, if you don’t have enough money for the deposit, Brigit may be a better fit.

To build your credit, Self Financial is another viable alternative. Similar to Brigit, Self Financial offers a Credit Builder Account that allows you to save money while building your credit. You can check out our complete Self Financial review here.

Brigit Review: Final Thoughts

Brigit is a solid financial app for those with bad credit and for those who struggle with their monthly finances. By providing no-interest cash advances and credit building loans, Brigit can help improve your finances while teaching you how to save smarter.

Keep in mind, this app is designed to help get you back on your feet. It shouldn’t be used forever. Learning how to create a budget and build an emergency fund are things that will provide better results over the long term.

With that said, if you need help getting your finances on solid ground, Brigit can provide you with the financial tools to get back on track and stay there.
