This summer, Greg and I went on a super cheap trip to an all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.  For around $800 per person including our flights, we stayed seven days and six nights at the Viva Wyndham Maya.  Since it is an all-inclusive resort, all of our food, alcohol, and entertainment was included in the price of our trip.  We really enjoyed the resort and thought it offered a tremendous value for what we paid.  Here are some of the highlights of our trip:

Viva Wyndham Maya Review

The Beach....
The Beach….

When we go on vacation, one of our favorite things to do is lay on the beach and relax.  The Viva Wyndham Maya had one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen in my life.  The sand was soft and the water was so clear that I could hardly believe it.  And, the beach had plenty of palapas for shade as long as you were willing to get up early enough to claim one.

Adults-Only Pool...
Adults-Only Pool…

The Viva Wyndham Maya had two pools, one larger pool with a swim-up bar and another smaller pool for adults.  Although I did like both pools, we preferred the beach instead.  The adults-only pool was probably my favorite because it was quiet, relaxing, and had a small bar that no one else seemed to know about.  It was a great place to hang out and have a few drinks with friends without dealing with kids splashing and making a lot of noise.

The View From Our Balcony…

Although the rooms weren’t anything fancy, I thought they were fine.  Our room had white walls and very sparse decor.  The maids kept it spotless and went out of their way to create a different towel animal for us every day.  We stayed in room 1200 which was on the second floor right on the beach.  It had two balconies, an outdoor Jacuzzi, and a small but efficient bathroom.  Our room also had a mini fridge and a flat screen TV with at least a few English-speaking channels.

Our Room.....
Our Room…..

The food ranged from downright strange to absolutely delicious.  We were always able to find something we liked at the big main buffet or the buffet down on the beach.  Breakfast was probably my favorite.  At both buffets, they had an omelet station where they would make fresh omelets while you watched.  The drinks were awesome!  All three of the bars had a large drink list posted on the wall as well.  My favorite drinks were the mojito, fresa colada, and banana mama.  They were generous with alcohol and more than happy to fill up your insulated mug if you had one.

Overall, we had a great time at the Viva Wyndham Maya and would definitely go back.  It wasn’t perfect, but we chose not to sweat the small stuff and had a blast.  We also fell in love with Mexico itself and cannot wait to explore other parts of the country.

  1. My sophomore year of college my friends and I went to Acapulco for spring break and did one of the all-inclusive packages. I’d say that it was great for our purposes at the time but I probably wouldn’t choose to do that exact same thing again. Basically I think we paid way too much money for what really wasn’t all that “nice” of an experience. I do know people who absolutely love Mexico though and I would certainly like to go back at some point for a different experience.

  2. This is one of our dream vacations, Holly. Seems like a super great price for an awesome vacation! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.

  3. Wow, it looks incredible! Really nice and the price is absolutely amazing for an all inclusive resort. Not to mention that the view is worth all that money 🙂

We’ve been in Turkey last year to an all inclusive resort – they can get pretty impressive too there and we absolutely loved it. For a vacation from which you only want relaxation like we did, an all inclusive resort seems like the best idea because you don’t have to move around too much.

  4. We went to Playa del Carmen for our honeymoon last year – we actually went this time of year, too – and we had a great time. We stayed at Royal Hideaway Playacar and had the place almost completely to ourselves because we stayed off-season. That was the first time I had ever done an all-inclusive resort, and it sounds like we had a pretty similar experience, specially when it comes to the food! Breakfast was my absolute favorite, and dinners were either very tasty or a little strange. We also went to Chichen-Itza and Valladolid which was probably the highlight of the trip.

  5. That sounds like a really awesome trip. I usually get tempted by the various all-inclusive resort trips that I see pop up on living social. The price is usually right, but I don’t have the time right now to be able to get away for a week. Down the road though, beaches ahoy!

I won a week’s stay at a condo in Mexico last year at a business expo, but my wife was too terrified of Mexico to agree to go. I even created a Power Point presentation to try to convince her that the options we had were safe, but no dice. We ended up going to Disneyland instead…

  7. I’ve never been to Mexico, and at that price, it’s worth checking out! We visited the beach in Florida for vacation this year. 🙂

  8. I’ve never been to an all inclusive resort before. I have been looking a lot of the packages on Living Social though. I’m always tempted to buy one when I see a great deal. I am thinking next year I may just take an adult vacation without the kiddos. We’ll see…

My Jamaica honeymoon in Ocho Rios made me fall in love with all-inclusive resorts. I can’t imagine a relaxing vacation any other way! We definitely want to try Mexico next as it seems they have cheaper options so we could go more frequently.

  10. I haven’t done any all inclusive trips but I really want to do an all inclusive trip to Italy. The deals I’ve seen are really reasonable.

  11. Do you find these inclusive vacations through a certain site? Is there one that you recommend? A few commenters mentioned living social..I have heard of applevacations. What do you use?

  12. I’ve been to Mexico many many times, but never to the beaches. I used to live on the border – a totally different side of Mexico. I’ve never gone to the all inclusive resorts before because I’m just not really a beach person, but your pictures make it look enticing!

  15. You got lucky with the balcony! Most people will not get that. In fact, we are timeshare owners at Viva Wyndham and have never stayed in those rooms. They did show them to us in 1998 when we purchased our timeshare (which we’d never do again!), but we haven’t seen them since, lol. Don’t know what you need to do to get those rooms!
