To put it simply, the Hotel Villa Honegg is one of the most beautiful hotels in the world. Located near the top of a mountain (Bürgenstock) and overlooking a crystal clear lake, this 5-star hotel is just a 20-minute drive from Lucerne, Switzerland. The building is charming, the rooms are cozy, and that pool view… I’ll get to that in a minute!
Our family had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Villa Honegg during our 18-day trip to Europe. What a way to cap off a trip! We had a wonderfully relaxing stay, and I’d highly recommend this hotel for a special occasion.
In this Hotel Villa Honegg review, I’ll cover the major amenities the hotel has to offer. I’ll also talk a bit about pricing and how it’s not right for every budget. And, of course, I’ll share plenty of pictures of the world’s most beautiful pool view!
So, what do you say? Let’s get started!
With just 23 rooms, the Hotel Villa Honegg is truly a boutique hotel, catering to those who want to get away from it all. Just driving up to the villa feels special. The short, winding drive up the mountain is packed with incredible views of Lake Lucerne and the villages below. But don’t worry; even though some of the turns are a bit sharp, I never felt like I was hanging off the side of a cliff.
When you come around the last bend, you’re greeted with a spectacular view of the hotel complex. The Hotel Villa Honegg is actually composed of 2 buildings – the main building and the Dépendance annex, situated right beside the hotel. The walk between the two buildings is only about 100 paces, but they’re also connected by an underground parking garage which keeps visitors warm and cozy in the winter. And, YES, the hotel offers free parking.
The main villa features all of the hotel’s most important amenities. There you’ll find the hotel restaurant, a terrace with an incredible lake view, and – of course – the pool. The fitness room, spa, and main lobby are also here. In the annex, you’ll find a meeting room, some suites, and a kitchen.
As I mentioned before, staying here is best suited for a special occasion – like an anniversary or honeymoon. While it lacks the tropical atmosphere of some romantic spots, the surrounding beauty is hard to match.
Room prices at the Hotel Villa Honegg start around $600 per night ($500 for suites in the annex) with rates for some rooms climbing past $2,000 a night. While we don’t always take the whole family to this nice of a place, these rates are pretty typical for a 5-star luxury resort… and they’re actually cheaper than some places we’ve stayed before.
Holly and I stayed in one of the classic top floor rooms while the kids and Brian (Holly’s brother) stayed in the annex. Our room featured a beautiful mountain view, a super comfortable bed, and a very nice bathroom – complete with a separate bathtub and shower. The room also included a complimentary minibar, access to wifi, and free breakfast. Here are a few stock photos because my kids tore our room apart before we could get decent pictures…
The kid’s suite featured one bedroom and a pull-out couch in the main living area. The bathroom was also very nice, including a bathtub. Free breakfast was also included, as was a nice kid’s bath bag upon arrival. They even had little kid sized robes, which our girls LOVED. Learn more about rooms at the Hotel Villa Honegg here.
Hotel Villa Honegg: The Vibe
If you’re looking for a quiet place to enjoy nature and relax, this is it. The hotel feels small, intimate, and classy. Most guests are friendly but keep to themselves – not because they’re rude but because the atmosphere is extremely relaxed. Even when it’s “busy,” you can practically hear a pin drop on the terrace. Guests are content to chill in their lounge chairs, enjoy the sound of distant cow bells, and soak up the view of Lake Lucerne below.
The staff members at the Hotel Villa Honegg are extremely polite and well-trained. Most of them speak exceptionally good English, so communication is never a problem. Additionally, due to the small size of the hotel, it often feels like there are more staff than guests. While they rarely make themselves noticed, you’ll never have trouble finding a staff member if you need assistance.
Things to Do at the Hotel Villa Honegg
The Hotel Villa Honegg is perched near the top of the Bürgenstock, sitting on about 7.5 acres of land that is surrounded by farms. It’s an extremely peaceful setting, and you really feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. With nothing much around, what the heck is there to do? Plenty!
No, there aren’t a lot of sightseeing options, but staying here isn’t meant to be that type of vacation. While we spent most of our time lounging on the terrace and in the swimming pool, there are also several hiking trails in the area. Holly and I hiked up to the top of the mountain where we were treated to a spectacular view of a different part of the lake, including the city of Lucerne. You’ll also spot several cows along the way!
There’s also a restaurant at the top and a glass elevator (Hammetschwand Lift) moving up and down the side of a cliff, providing even more breathtaking views. For those who prefer riding to hiking, the hotel also offers complimentary access to mountain bikes. Golfers can also play just down the road.
If a spa is more your style, you’re in luck. The Hotel Villa Honegg offers a variety of massages, facial treatments, and more. There is also a very nice sauna, steam room, and gym if you’re so inclined. If you want to get off the mountain, Lucerne is less than a half hour’s drive away. You can also find various water activities and sports located on the lake below.
Hotel Villa Honegg: The Pool
Let’s talk about this amazing pool, shall we?
There are actually 2 separate pools – a small indoor pool and the famous outdoor pool. The indoor pool is nice, featuring great alpine views through the windows. It’s furnished with comfortable yet stylish lounge chairs and a small bar area where you’ll find fruit, water, and spare towels. Although separate from the pool itself, there is also an entrance to the main (outdoor) pool located inside – perfect for those cold winter months!
Known as the “Stairway to Heaven Pool,” the outdoor pool is famous for one reason – you won’t find a better pool view anywhere in the world! The L-shaped infinity pool provides a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and of Lake Lucerne below. It’s simply breathtaking.
But the view isn’t the only great thing about the pool. The hotel keeps this pool heated to a lovely 34ºC (rougly 93.5ºF) so guests can use it all year long. It also features a variety of “jacuzzi” areas that can be activated with the touch of a button. And if you get tired of one view, simply wade to the other side of the “L” for a completely different perspective of the area. But enough of me rattling on… here’s a video I shot along with some more sweet pics!
Breakfast at Hotel Villa Honegg
As I mentioned earlier, breakfast is included with all stays at the Hotel Villa Honegg. Served until 2:00 P.M., we ate late, using it as more of a brunch. Breakfast comes with your choice of bread, a great meat and cheese tower, plus several à la carte options. Your choice of drink is also included.
On the other hand, dinner at the hotel is not included. Like many other restaurants in Switzerland, dinners can get pretty expensive – which, to be fair, shouldn’t be unexpected at a 5-star hotel. Most entrées range between 25 CHF and 55 CHF, which currently converts to almost exactly the same amount in USD. The restaurant has a set menu featuring locally sourced ingredients, complete with different specials each night. There are also a couple of kids’ options, which we were happy to see. All things considered, the food and service are good but may not fit into everybody’s budget.
Hotel Villa Honegg Review: The Verdict
What do I think of the Hotel Villa Honegg? Simply put, I love it.
The Hotel Villa Honegg is a great spot to get away from it all. In my opinion, it’s best suited for couples or families with adult children, although the staff made our young kids feel extremely welcomed. The intimate, natural setting makes it a superb spot for a special occasion – like an annversary or honeymoon. Staying a few nights at the end of a longer trip is also recommended.
And that pool… I can’t wait to get back and see it someday! Seriously, the pool is something you need to experience at least once in your life. Book your stay at the Hotel Villa Honegg here.
