Good morning, party people!  I simply cannot believe that this year is more than halfway over.  Where has the time gone?  Seriously.

To be honest, we have been sooooooo lazy this summer.  Since Greg has been working a ton of overtime, me and the kids have mostly just hung around. Since it doesn’t cost anything at this point, I’ve mostly been taking the kids to the neighborhood pool so they can expend some energy and have fun with their friends. We also go on walks, ride bikes, and play in the back yard.  It’s been a fun and relaxing summer so far!

My mom says this is a pumpkin. What do you think?

Oh, and my garden has totally gone gangbusters.  I’m pretty sure I’m growing a pumpkin at the moment which is pretty strange since we did not plant pumpkins.  Riddle me that.  In addition to spending time obsessing over our mysterious pumpkin, we ate a few of the tomatoes that ripened over the weekend.  They were awesome!  I have a cucumber and some banana peppers that are just about ready to pick too.  I love gardening!

Cash Money Update

Even though I took several days off in June, it was still a great month for me in terms of income.  The total amount of cash money I grossed as a self-employed goddess in June was……*drumroll, please*

 $5,615

This total includes all of the money that I made from my various streams of income:

  • Credit Card Sales
  • Consulting
  • Freelance writing
  • Affiliate advertising
  • Ghost Writing

Please remember that I make the majority of my income from a variety of freelance writing jobs, not my blog.  If you’re interested in learning how to get freelance writing jobs, please check out this post:

How To Get Freelance Writing Jobs

My earnings have managed to plateau in the $5,000- $6,000 range, and I truly hope to change that one of these days.  On the other hand, I’m fairly happy with where I’m at for now.  I work about 30-40 hours per week and am able to be flexible for my husband and the kids.  My daughter starts kindergarten in a few weeks and, because of my flexible schedule, I will be able to take her to school each day and pick her up.  You cannot put a price tag on that!

If you remember, I set a goal of earning $4,000 per month when I left my job in April of 2013.  I have had good months and bad months since then, but I have always surpassed my goal.

My Expenses

Having relatively low expenses is one of the perks of being a web-based writer.  Other than my laptop and an internet connection, I just don’t need much.  However, hiring writers for our travel site has wreaked havoc on our expenses for the last few months.  Hopefully it will be worth it!  Here is a basic rundown of my expenses from last month:

  • Staff Writing: $240
  • Blog Hosting: $12
  • Internet $0

You’re probably wondering why my internet didn’t cost anything last month.  I called AT&T to bitch about an outage one day and they gave me a $80 credit which wiped out my bill for the month.  Huzzah!  No matter how you cut it, complaining usually works!

That’s about it, folks.  Make sure to check out some of my most popular posts from the past few weeks:

  1. Fantastic month for you! I love the sound of your lazy days around the pool – it’s still pretty cold in the UK at the moment so that sounds perfect 🙂

  2. You’re a rock star, Holly. Making bank and taking names at AT&T. Hope you’re enjoying the ride!

  3. Did you see the Comcast customer service recorded call article on MarketWatch. Com? When I read it, I thought of your recent post. 🙂

    1. Yes, I listened to the whole thing. Unbelievable. I dealt with a lot of incompetent people, but never someone quite like that!

  4. Congrats $5,000-$6,000 in stable freelance income is not bad considering you get to spend summer with the kids!

  5. A pumpkin huh? It must be the work of Monsanto…

  6. My June income was pretty expensive, I had lots of expenses during last month. I was sick and got admitted in the hospital and I need to buy my medicines good for two months.

  7. Hilarious! If it’s a pumpkin, it’s awful weird looking…..and it looks like the weeds are under control (unlike mine). Nice job with AT&T! It seems like everyone (even here in STL) has been having trouble. I don’t have AT&T but everyone at work does…maybe I’ll clue them in that with a little persistence they can get a bill credit! Nice!

    1. I think it’s a pumpkin! I googled pics of what they look like when they’re growing and it certainly looks like one.

  8. That’s a nice income for that number of hours. You have achieved a nice balance. I feel very imbalanced these days but I think it’s because I’m still starting out and working full-time. Congratulations, Holly!

  9. Congratulations on your steady success so far! I work double those hours and don’t make that much as an attorney! Good luck in the future!

  10. I love that you have basically a $60 – 65k job working from home. That must be an amazing feeling… that’s pretty darn solid, and you’re consistent in your earnings.

As for the pumpkin from non-pumpkin seeds – I feel like you’d notice the difference if you planted a pumpkin seed vs peppers or cucumbers. Was this a garden when you moved into your new home? Maybe they were the pumpkin culprits?

  11. Congrats on your garden success! Our garden is starting to produce now too, we’ve been able to pick cucumbers and zucchini.

  12. Another inspiring income report! Our little garden has been going crazy too. One cucumber plant has yielded more than we can even keep up with.

  13. My June was good with income, but terrible with expenses. That was mainly due to the new house, but our budget was blown up. It was blown up, picked up, put back together, then blown up again. It was nuts!

  14. Ben @ The Wealth Gospel says:

Nice work! 🙂 30-40 hours a week sounds delicious to me

  15. That’s great that you’re steady like that and have lot of time to spend with your family. You don’t want either side of the scale tipping too far either way. Keep up the good work!

  16. Congrats, Holly! What a great month! I’m so impressed by your freelance writing income–nice! Can’t wait to see how the pumpkin turns out…

  17. Looks like you had a killer month Holly. I’m sure you’ll break the 6k mark soon enough…afterall, flat lines are no fun. See ya around!

  18. I love that your garden is taking off and I can’t wait to hear what the mystery pumpkin actually tastes like! And it is nice to have a flexible schedule like you do, especially once school starts. I love that I get to put my son on the bus and still get teary eyed almost every time that I do (and it’s been 3 years).

  19. I am jealous of your garden! Despite the mysterious pumpkin. You’ll gave to let us know how that turns out…

  20. That is some solid online income! I just hope to one day break even 🙂

    BTW, what is Ghost Writing?

  21. Nice work Holly! I’ve hit a bit of a plateau myself, but I’m still hitting my goals which is what counts in the end I guess. 🙂 Glad to hear the garden is going well. We’ve had lettuce going crazy and a few other things doing well. However, we’ve had an unseasonably cool summer, which I don’t mind at all but I’m concerned it’s going to wreak havoc on our peppers.

  22. That’s seriously kick ass Holly. Way to go. I’m not as prevalent as you online (I was even reading something the other day, and I saw your name and had to do a double take), but definitely more fuel for the fire 🙂

  23. Welcome to the world of entrepreneurship! Income will fluctuate, but it should average out to a reasonable level. You need to focus on that level you want to take it to. Good luck.

  24. I’m totally jealous of your red tomatoes! We’ve got a million tomatoes, but they’re still a long ways off from ripening. My boyfriend and I keep having the fight about frying green tomatoes; I say you start frying now, so you don’t have an overload of red ones when they start ripening. He says I’m not allowed to pick ANY until we get the first red one.

It definitely looks like something in the squash family! The first year I did a big garden, I planted my vine-y squashes too closely together, and ended up with some very strange crosses. My spaghetti squashes were striped, my zucchini mis-shapen, etc. I didn’t even realize that was possible! Lesson learned, but it was an interesting summer!

  25. Well our city is finally doing some work on our yard, so I can finally start to plan my retaining wall project and subsequent garden project for my wife. It would be great to have it all set up so that we can plant things right away next Spring. Always happy to read your updates!

  26. You’re doing a marvelous job, Holly! I’m so impressed.. It’s never easy being a freelance writer.. There are always ups and downs. But the secret is to never give up! 🙂

  27. Great month Holly, even better I read that you have the flexibility to be with your daughter to pick her up from school that’s a great thing to be able to do.

2 things, your link for your “travel site” needs to be updated. Also I’m heading to Nicaragua wondering if you would be interested in a post/review for your travel site?

    1. Thanks for letting me know the link was messed up! YES, please. We would love a guest post and will provide you with a backlink to your site!

  28. I love your amusing garden updates! Like others have said, that’s an amazing monthly income, and even though you’ve “plateaued,” surpassing your goal is important! I’d say your switch has been a great success beyond the money, especially since you get to enjoy time with your girls. Great job on getting the $80 credit, too. Woo!

  29. I’m probably a little too intrigued by the pumpkin conundrum… but that made me laugh a lot.

And, personally, I’m am pretty happy you let travel writers wreak a little havoc on your expenses for the month ;o) Especially when you let them write about their favorite place to eat in the world.

  30. Looks like a pumpkin to me. But wait a while just to make sure it’s not an eggplant or something gross like that.

  31. Congrats to you Holly 🙂 I hope you have a wicked July 🙂

  32. Wow! interesting post Holly. You have really maintained a good balance of your income & expenses. I must say I am quite jealous of you as you have spent a wonder time in the previous month with your hubby & kids with a good income..on the other hand I was stuck on a debt trap due my new car..:(..now the situation is quite cool..:)

  33. Another great month Holly and good that you have multiple sources of income and been able to surpass your goal every month! I was on the sidelines for a little bit with credit card rewards, but your article has inspired me to get back in the game!

  34. That’s amazing. Congratulations! How do you handle taxes? Do you have a specific percentage you set aside? I’m always flummoxed by taxes when it comes to freelance income.
