If you live anywhere near the Midwest, you’ll be able to relate to this post.  It’s been colder than a witch’s tit around these parts, so cold that I don’t think I’ve been warm for two weeks.  The pipes have frozen at our new home and at our temporary home so far.  The roads are nasty and dirty, with all of this yucky muddy snow tracking in almost everywhere you go.  I already told Greg that we’re having a shoes-off policy at our new house since it now has all new floors.  I actually had that policy at our old house, but no one listened.  But, there’s a new sheriff in town.  Well, not really.  It’s still just me.  Sigh.

Like the picture above says, whoever is praying for snow needs to be slapped.  And, to those of you who still have your Christmas lights up, please stop encouraging the prolonging of this season. Take all of that down, including your tree for heaven’s sake.  It’s time to move on to another season.  So, let’s talk about spring.

How I’m Getting Ready for Spring

Screw you guys, I’m outta here.  As I mentioned a few weeks ago, we’re heading to Jamaica in a few weeks, on a trip that was mostly financed with credit card rewards.  Woot!  And, let me tell you, it is so weird leaving an arctic tundra and landing in a tropical paradise.  I do hope to get a little sun and finally warm up while we’re there.  And hopefully I won’t blind someone since my skin is absolutely pale and white.

In other news, Greg and I own several pointless and boring web domains.  However, we recently bought one that I find rather promising.  I’ll be talking about it in the new few weeks, especially as we create our site and get the ball rolling.  I hope to avoid all of the mistakes that we’ve made in the past and start this one off on the right foot.  Stay tuned!

Ready to Move

Not surprisingly, I am sick and tired of living in two places and having my belongings all over the place.  I am more than ready to have a home base again and get settled.  And I am uber-pumped for the fact that our new house has a community pool only a few blocks away.  I cannot wait to take the kids this spring and summer.  It’s going to be a blast!

Anyways, that’s about all that’s going on with me.  How are you getting ready for spring?  What are you looking forward to over the next few months?

  1. We just booked our own vacation to Mexico. Even though its not for a few months, that was my big “screw you” to the cold!

I’m looking forward to hearing what you guys have planned for those web domains.

    1. Nice! Where are you going in Mexico? I love Mexico!

  2. I didn’t really think of it in terms of getting ready for spring, but we’ll be heading down to Florida in March for our son’s baptism/other son’s birthday, so that will be nice and warm! Not quite as warm as Jamaica (we’ll be in North Florida), but much better than here.

    1. Sweet. I have no idea what the winter temps are in Jamaica but will be happy if it’s above 70! =)

  3. JAMAICA! I went there on our honeymoon a couple years ago and it was seriously paradise. I also escaped the frozen tundra for Hawaii a few years back for my sister-in-law’s wedding. Returning from Hawaii was one of the most brutal things ever (it was in February…). On a side note it’s really freaking cold here and it’s getting old…schools are closed for the fourth time this Winter because of extremely cold weather. Unfortunately I don’t go to school or work at a school so I’m heading into work in just a little bit.

    1. Yep, coming back is the worst! Oh well, the Midwest really does have beautiful springs, summers, and falls. So at least we have that to look forward to!

  4. My parents just finished booking up a family vacation to Turks and Caicos for everyone so we have that to look forwards. And of course, Spring is the official start of Hurling season, which pretty much dominates my free time from St Patty’s day until Labor day weekend. I can’t wait to be able to get outside and on the pitch again.

Other than that we have started our annual sort through close and put in keep and get rid of piles. At least there are less and less to do this with each year (well not with baby clothes we are holding on to those for a little while longer).

    1. What in the world is hurling?

We just moved in our new house and I packed stuff away for a garage sale as I was unpacking. I ended up with 3 giant boxes of stuff for Goodwill or a garage sale!

Are you guys having another baby?

      1. Hurling is the national sport of Ireland. Its kind of like Lacross mixed with Hockey mixed with soccer. There really is nothing quite like it.

Yes we are having another baby. Due at the end of July (Dr doesn’t think we are going to make it that far). We are, as my friends put it #teamgreen, since we don’t know the sex until the baby comes out. So this is kind of our only big trip for the year and my parents wanted to take the whole family somewhere.

I guess that is good news from moving… being able to get rid of stuff! The bad news is actually having to pack up stuff and move

  5. Thankfully we’ve not gotten hit by the snow, but it’s been freaking cold here. Well, it’s been all over the place really. It started out near 60 yesterday and was -5 when we went to bed and looking like it’s going to stay that way all week. I’m looking forward to Spring because it means that the kids can actually go outside so they don’t go completely nutty from being all cooped up.

    1. Yeah, I know some kids with serious cabin fever! It’s been so cold out that you can’t really even play in the snow.

  6. Yep, we are hating this crap too. In an effort to NOT have a ridiculously high energy bill again next month, we’ve turned down the heat, in spite of the Polar Vortex. We’re not nearly as amazing (or crazy, maybe?) as our friends, who keep their heat at 54 degrees, but we need to turn it down a few notches more so as not to fund the entire energy company staff. We are planning a short and sweet trip just north of here in late spring. Cannot wait for that!

    1. Yeah, our heat bill was $225 last month, and that was for our tiny rental home!!!

  7. We’re planning a trip to St. Maarten in April that will be partially paid for by hubby’s job because he has to go for work. Can’t wait for that!!!

    1. Nice! I need a “work trip” to the Caribbean too!

  8. My wife and I are headed to Cancun in a few weeks as part of her work incentive trip. I can’t wait as the Northeast has been socked with snow and cold as well. Interestingly enough, I am working on two other sites myself and getting them traction as well. Lots of work, but lots to look forward to at the same time.

  9. After this last snow storm in NY this past weekend, I started planning a spring break trip to Florida. I have points for the plane tickets and a free place to stay. Just the thought of planning the trip is alleviating some of my winter blues.

  10. oh man I’d love a trip to Cuba or Jamaica right about now but thats out of the budget for this year! I’m also ready for warmer weather and am happy with how fast January went by!

    1. Me too. It can only get warmer from here, right?

  11. I need spring in a big kind of way….my family and I headed to a nearby tourist spot (Wisconsin Dells) to get away from winter for a short time….and got stranded due a blizzard. Ugh…come on warm weather!

    1. The Dells are awesome. Sorry you got trapped there though!

  12. I hear ya! We’re getting hammered in the Northeast as well. I’m so over shoveling snow! I remember back in 2011 we had a similar winter with snowstorms every week in January. We also booked it outta here and went to Miami. I’m looking forward to warmer weather and no snow shoveling.

    1. Ugh, me too! It’s been drifting a lot here which has caused more shoveling than necessary. Mostly for Greg and not me, but still =)

  13. We haven’t had any snow for the month of January, but the stupid wind won’t stop blowing. We seriously had about five thousand tumbleweeds stuck in our front fence. I wanted to set them on fire, but common sense won out with the wind and all. We are going to San Diego for spring break and I can’t wait!

  14. Hey Holly, I’m curious about you owning web domains. I’m pretty financially savvy but that is one area I know nothing about. Is it an income generator? Looking through your archives of featured posts, I don’t find anything about that so could you do an article on it some day? Thanks and have a great trip!

  15. I am getting ready for spring by putting our house up for sale. It is going to be a long process, but hopefully we can get it sold before Fall. Who knows though.

  16. Yes, I can’t wait for this winter to end and it’s only January. Damn you Polar Vortex! I saw the 40 car pileup in Indiana…very scary. Oh and sorry…just took the Christmas Tree down this past weekend…been too busy =)

  17. Jamaica should be a fantastic break to the never ending winter you guys in the north are enduring. We’ve got a trip to the big island of Hawaii in just under 2 weeks, so that’s the big thing I’m looking forward to. And my wife will be with me! Woot!

All the best with the new domain, too. Cheers.

  18. I don’t miss those midwest winters! Hope you get a nice break with Jamaica! We’ve had stellar weather here in LA but guess what? The ONE weekend I want it to be nice they are calling for some rain this weekend….the same weekend of my 1/2 marathon. FU Murphy’s Law! Keeping my fingers crossed it doesn’t rain sunday!

  19. Chicago is the WORST right now. I’m dying over here. I have like nine layers of clothing on. It sucks!

We just got back from Cancun though. It was much needed, but a pretty rude awakening to go from 75 degrees to -2.

  20. Love the fact that you’re heading on a vaca and you’re doing it mainly thru CC rewards. I can imagine that you guys will end up a having an even more relaxing time knowing you won’t be coming home to a pile of credit card bills. Hope it warms up in IN, crazy warm out here in CA, suppose to be 74 today, but we need some rain really BAD.

  21. I can’t wait for spring this year! It will be the first time I can head to a “back yard” and play catch with my kids. No more City / Apartment living.

    1. Yay! Yeah, I’m ready to play in the yard too!

  22. We went to Cancun in December and it was awesome!!! We have to save up money and miles for our 2014 travels.

    1. Sweet! Yeah, that’s basically what we did. We need those miles to stretch our budget a little!

  23. We’re having such a warm year here in Seattle that I really don’t feel like I need my winter vacation as much as usual. But we’re heading to Hawaii at the end of March and when we come back it’ll be nearly Spring! Just a few more weeks!

  24. haha love the pic! I get depressed with the cold and low light, it’s been cold all the way down to Guatemala as well, feeling really weird to sleep with a duvet when it’s normally 90. Sorry about the burst pipes, that sucks.

    1. They didn’t burst thankfully, they just froze!

  25. How exciting about your Jamaica trip! I’m looking forward to spring despite the weather being pretty temperate compared to other parts of the U.S., though could do without the allergies. 🙂

    1. Yeah, the Midwest has been hammered this year. So over it!

  26. I’m definitely ready for the Spring. I hate cold weather so I have been pretty miserable!

  27. I am SO ready for spring. New York is horrible because there’s no respite from the elements. You don’t get to run to your car that eventually warms up, you’re just in the cold ALL the time. Plus the streets get disgusting when it snows. It’s like wading through brown slush. I wish I were in Jamaica! Enjoy!

    1. I hate the brown slush…hate how it gets on my shoes, on my pants, and tracks in my house =(

  28. Jamaica will feel like heaven! We’ve had a pretty mild winter, although we barely got any rain, which is a huge issue. When do you move into the new house? For some reason, I thought you were already moved.

    1. Sorry, sometimes my posts don’t make sense because I write them ahead of time and they don’t post until after-the-fact. We moved this weekend!

  29. What I wouldn’t do to escape somewhere warm these days! Man oh man. I feel your pain with the freezing pipes, Holly. We’ve had that issue a few times and it makes me really nervous. Could end up costing us big bucks if they burst. Hello emergency fund!

  30. I was just thinking about how wonderful it would be if Spring could come early this year. Normally I don’t like it too much because of all the rain, but at this point, as long as it’s not cold that would be fine! Hell, I’d be happy with 45-50 degree weather at this point.

You should have nice weather in Jamaica; my coworker booked her honeymoon there this July and has been checking the weather out for fun this past week. 70’s-80s.

  31. I just can’t wait for it to not be dark when I leave work. It’s so depressing watching the whole day pass by through the window and being trapped in here. Ick. I’m also looking forward to exploring the area I moved to, but it’s been so snowy and gross I don’t want to go anywhere. I just sort of hibernate or go to work or go spend the weekends at my parents. And it’s not even February yet. Ugh.

  32. OOOoooooo! A teaser! LET ME KNOW NOW!

Glad to hear you’ll be enjoying Jamaica, we definitely did! Go and relax, then return to your igloo 🙂

  33. We just booked our honeymoon for July. It’s such a tease to book a tropical vacation with all this snow outside and have to wait until summer to be able to take it!

  34. It’s ice cold where I’m at here in the Chicago area….expected to get to minus-10 tonight at least, possibly minus-20 in some areas. Spring seems like so far away. I motivate myself by thinking that baseball spring training starts in February, which means warmer weather is on the (distant) horizon!

I’m with you on the no shoes inside rule.

  35. This is my first humid weather and it f-ing sucks. The windows in my apartment are drafty, so I covered them with plastic, but I don’t think I have much for insulation either. So, my favorite thing ever is a heated mattress pad – heavenly! It’s about vacation time too. Cancun sounds nice right about now! 🙂

  36. If I lived in the Mid-west, I would be more than antsy to head to Jamaica. I lived in Maryland for three years back in the late 1970s. That was enough of that kind of weather.

My plan for this spring is to have a giant garage sale and clear out all the crap that is preventing me from using my workbench. Anything that doesn’t sell is going to the dump or recycle center. Exciting, huh?

  37. It’s times like these that I’m very thankful that I live in California. I grew up on the East Coast and had enough of cold, endless winters. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be to have to deal with frozen pipes. I hope warm weather comes your way soon!
